Nursing licenses suspended after conviction of drug charges

Two women are among two dozen medical professionals who had emergency restrictions placed on their licenses or had their licenses suspended by the Division of Medical Quality Assurance of the Florida Department of Health.

The two are licensed practical nurse, one who lives in Bartow, Florida and the other is believed to be in Lake Wales, Florida. Both women faced drug charges. They either pleaded no contest or were convicted of the charges. That is what caused the emergency suspensions.

One of the women pleaded guilty to possession of Xanax or Alprazolam. That is a third-degree felony. She was arrested in 2014.

The other woman faced two charges from cases that began in 2008 and 2008. Both of the charges, purchasing cocaine and possessing cocaine, are third-degree felonies. She pleaded no contest or guilty to those charges. This is not the woman’s first time being sanctioned by the Department of Health. She was reprimanded in 2002 because of her “lengthy involvement with law enforcement and long-term pattern of abuse of alcohol and drugs.”

The other medical professionals whose licenses were suspended or received emergency restrictions including a doctor, registered nurses, an advanced nurse practitioner, a massage therapist, a respiratory therapist, certified nursing assistants and pharmacy technicians. These individuals all faced “serious licensing violations” including crimes violation of standards, sexual misconduct or drug use or diversion.

The women will have an opportunity to have a hearing on the actions of the Department of Health.

If you are facing repercussions because of a drug or other criminal charge, it’s important to have a knowledgeable attorney by your side.
